Game Review: Name of the Rose

The Name of the Rose (BGGlink)

I got to play The Name of the Rose yesterday with a gaming friend. It was the first play for both of us. The rules were fairly straight forward, although there was some unclear aspects of the game — especially with respect to when you run out of time tokens. However, the game played well for a deduction game in the spirit of Incognito.

At the start of the game, each player is given an identity. From there, their respective goal is to be the least “suspicious” monk after 6 days of game play. During each round, monks are moved around either increasing or decreasing their suspicion, which is then translated to clue points. Three points during the game, everyone reveals which color they are not. After the 6th day of game play, players attempt to guess who the other players are. Successful guesses further incriminate the player that was successfully identified. The player who is lowest on the clue track is the winner.

My thoughts on the game — the game was fun. Probably much better with more players. However, it just seemed like the game was too long for the end result. I would play the game again, but don’t miss it in my collection.
