Game Review: Hawaii

Hawaii (BGG Link)

Hawaii is a game set with a tropical theme whereby players maneuver a chieftain to wander about the island collecting huts that score points at the end of the game, during the game, or provide resources from round to round. The chieftain may also sail a boat to remote islands to gain points, resources, or fish. The game has a lot of opportunities to score points allowing for varying strategies. During the game, the players attempt to collect enough points in the round through purchasing items so as to yield an end of round scoring bonus. At the end of the game, players who have successfully planned out their village so as to activate point yielding buildings will score additional points. Three major criticisms of the game: there are a lot of components to set up at the beginning of the game which makes the game unapproachable, the theme seems pasted on, and finally when you fall behind the curve you are done for the rest of the game… no coming back. Other than that, the game was fun with a lot of decisions to make each round. I currently own the game and am on the fence on whether to keep or sell the game.
